Why does Subway want to burn me with coffee?

Today, and last week (either Tuesday or Wednesday) I went to Subway (store #3361 in Whitewater, WI) for breakfast. I've mentioned before that I love their breakfast flatbreads. It seems as if Subway wants me to burn myself and spill coffee all over though.

Here's the problem: they're giving out lids that don't fit the cups. They must have run out of the nice black lids that fit, and switched to a cheaper lid that's just a little too big for the cup. Unfortunately, when trying to put on a lid that's just a little too big it feels like it SHOULD be able to go on… until you force it, causing the cup to squeeze and spill coffee – right on your hand.

That first time I just decided to shrug it off, even though the mis-fitting lid allowed the coffee to slosh up out of the cup while pulling into the parking lot at work, spilling coffee in my car. Today I avoided a similar mess by only filling the cup about 3/4 full.

Like I said, the first time I just shrugged it off, but now they've had at least a week to figure this out. The lids don't fit. It's easy. They either don't care about their customers, or they can't figure out that a lid that doesn't fit… doesn't fit. Whether this is an act of incompetence, or a willful disregard for their customers, I will no longer be visiting this, or any other Subway, unless it's somehow made quite obvious that things like this are taken seriously.

Here are a few pictures of the lid –
This first one show how much the lid deforms when attempting to place it on the cup:

This one show the rims of the lid and cup lined up with each other (or rather, not lining up):

This last one is the lid, with a sheet of paper used to measure the cup. The edge of the paper to the blue line is a measure of the inside of the rim, which is quite a bit smaller than the inside rim on the lid:

Wow, you would think that with all of the lawsuits from years gone by that Subway would know better than to blantantly use an inappropriate lid on their coffee! I already smell a lawsuit, even from all the way down here by Willis Tower

    Let's be careful out there

Yeah, if I had driven with the cup between my legs I'd be a bajillionaire right now. 😛

I'd much rather see them fix this nonsense, and maybe give an apology and some sort of compensation to make up for the hassle. I won't hold my breath though, but I will hold on to my money and keep it from flowing their way.

Instead why not have a nice juice?

Because the coffee is part of the $3 breakfast deal. Without the coffee the sandwich is $0.50 more than with the coffee.

I guess if I weren't boycotting them now, I could just throw the empty cup away and still come out ahead… but that's just dumb. They should stop trying to get me to pour hot coffee on myself.

Can't you get a nice juice in place of the coffee? They are both liquids.

    You'd think so.
I think I mentioned in the $3 breakfast combo post this bit of ridiculousness though: the bacon flatbread and sausage flatbread are the same price. I couldn't get the combo when I got the sausage flatbread because it's not included in the deal. Bacon is in the deal, but replace it with a meat that costs the same price and the deal is GONE! GOOOONE!

Same reason Sandwich A with bacon for $3.50 qualifies but Sandwich A with sausage for $3.50 doesn't… marketing? Dunno.

If the coffee lids don't fit the cups, why not bring in your own thermos and have them fill that up instead? And if they refuse to fill up your thermos, then pour the coffee into your thermos. And you can do it right on their counter to show them that you are pouring it into your thermos.

I like the word thermos. I'm going to tweet that.

But then I have to carry a thermos around!

I bought a very cool Thermos … and then I gave it away because it never occured to me that (DUH!) I would have to carry it around O_o
