Hot Chocolate Dreams
Frig.
Yesterday was the first weekday this year that I didn't manage to post anything here. It's also a day when I left work early because of uncomfortable flu-like symptoms. I'm not going to say that I "have the flu" because then there's nothing I can do but mentally resign and let it "take its course"… no, I intend to crush most of these symptoms today and end up slaving away behind my desk again by tomorrow.
I can't remember the last time I had a good hot chocolate. It's one of those things that's awesome, easy, and I still somehow rarely ever indulge myself in. Perhaps my dreams were partially influenced by the above-mentioned symptoms, but if I were to describe my dreams last night, I think the closest I could come is "Raiders of the Lost Ark" meets "Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle" – minus the Nazis and replacing White Castle with hot chocolate.

Creamy hot chocolate
Ingredients
1/3 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
3/4 cup white sugar
1 pinch salt
1/3 cup boiling water
3 1/2 cups milk
3/4 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/2 cup half & half or cream
Method
Combine the cocoa, sugar and pinch of salt in a saucepan. Blend in the boiling water. Bring mixture to an easy boil stirring constantly. Simmer and stir 2 minutes ensuring that the mixture doesn't scorch.
Stir in 3 1/2 cups of milk and heat until very hot and just about to simmer (never boil milk)
Remove from heat and add vanilla. Divide between mugs and top each with some of the half & half or cream or whip the cream and dollop it on top.
The boy can't help it 😉

Water, milk, AND cream!
I was thinking of trying the Best-Ever Hot Cocoa Mix from Cook's Country… but might have to go buy some cream and try yours. I wonder if I could replace the cream with butter, I have some of that!

Oh.. "or whip the cream". I also have whipped cream.
I think my eyes skipped over that last sentence and assumed the cream was added in with the milk.

tom, any chance we can get more chocolate in your recipe? Or is it possible to have too much chocolate in hot chocolate?

The only type of hot chocolate I don't like is when my chocolate bars melt in the car.
