What Are The "Top" Charities?

I'm trying to figure out the most popular non-profit charities, and I think the best way to get some good input is to pose that question to you guys. I'm hoping for 5-10, but there's no hard limit.

So:
What charities would/do you donate to?

non-profit charities. Is United Way non-profit? I know a handful of girls that contribute to various animal rights organizations. uhhh, I'm a member of the Chicago Artists Coalition, that's non-profit, i think. Then there's the people walking the streets of Michigan Avenue all the time asking me to save the planet or the whales or the kids or something.

All charities are not-for-profit but not all not-for-profits are charities.

The first question you have to ask is "What are your values?" There are charities for anything/one and everything/one. The "Top" charities for one person may not be the "Top" charities for another person (especially when it comes to guns, aborition, human rights, AIDS, environment and religion).

The United Way (as the name might imply) is a not-for-profit umbrella organization for many charities. You can visit their website to better understand what services for what segment of the population they serve.

    Short explanation:
I'm going to create a site where people can donate money to a charity with no out-of-pocket cost to themselves. I want them to be able to choose from a list of possible charities… and having too many (or too narrow a focus) is something I'd like to avoid.
