Peanut butter in egg rolls

Egg rolls.

Yum.

Of all the egg rolls I've ever eaten, the best have been from Moy's Restaurant in Elkhorn, WI.
What sets these egg rolls apart from the rest? Peanut butter.
From the description on their menu page:

Small chunks of chopped barbecued pork, shrimp, celery, cabbage and a touch of peanut butter in egg roll wrapper.

I always thought this was an odd thing, even though it works very well, but a quick google search shows just how common it is: over 2 million results for "egg rolls peanut butter", many being recipes or links to restaurants.

(spudart originally asked me to blog about this on 2/29/12)

Whatchamacallit

In case you didn't know this – Hershey's Whatchamacallit bar is one of the best candy bars ever. It's tied with Snickers and Reese's Peanut Butter Cups for the title of "favorite candy bar".

Recently I ran across a recipe for peanut butter balls (peanut butter, crushed graham crackers, and butter dipped in chocolate) that sounded AWESOME – pretty much a Reese's in ball form.. but I never got around to making them. Instead, it seems like my subconscious was working on one-upping the recipe: get rid of the graham cracker and add in rice crispies, then mix in some caramel. You know what you've got? Whatchamacallit balls.

Whatchamacallit balls.

The hangup I'm running into now is the caramel. I don't want a super-runny caramel sauce, but I don't want it to be as solid as a caramel candy. "Candy bar caramel" is what I'm looking for, like in Snickers or Whatchamacallits (it's fun to type. try it.) Maybe someone (Tom?) has some ideas for this.

Inspiration Strikes… With Sundae Toppings

I went to Culver's for lunch (AGAIN!) today. Good stuff, as always.

Today I had a strange craving for a sundae. With a combination of toppings I've never thought of before – peanut butter and Snickers.

I'm not sure where the idea came from, but the combination is ABSOLUTELY BRILLIANT.

I'm eating it now as I type. Nomnomnomnomnom!

Do Your Nuts Have Salmonella?

First peanut butter.. now pistachios?!

These are supposed to be healthy things, not killers in disguise. I wonder what would happen if companies stopped focusing purely on short term profits and aimed towards longevity, quality, and honesty. Crazy idea, huh?

Also, don't combine Salmon and Nutella in a recipe and then call it Salmonella.
