Holidays Shmolidays

I remember, back when I was a kid, how much I looked forward to certain holidays. The same ones that (i'm guessing) most kids also enjoyed - christmas, halloween, easter, and probably some others that I've forgotten were every exciting or fun.

As the years grew in numbers, my interests started shifting. Christmas was still good, because there were gifts, and family type people, and tons of food. Thanksgiving started creeping up on my favorites list because of the feasts. And halloween started becoming more of a chore than a holiday. Easter.. meh.  When I discovered my joy of blowing things up (in a controlled setting) the 4th of July blasted its way into my #1 SUPER AWESOME FAVORITE HOLIDAY spot.

Nowadays, other than the 4th, most holidays just seem "blah." For the most part, the ones that I get the most excited about are the ones that I never remember, but are a state/federal holiday and require me to stay at least 5,000 miles away from even the idea of working.

So this halloween, I think I'm going to find someone to just hang out with, drink a bit, and waste the night away forgetting all about the costumes and the candy. And on friday I'm going to stock up on cheap candy. Yay. :)

IDEA: Fitness Power Plant

I like things that "kill 2 birds with one stone".. it's even better if nothing dies, and if I don't have to look for any stones. So here's the non-bird killing idea of the day: a fitness center/power plant.

This is an easy one, it only has 3 parts:

  1. Start a fitness center
  2. Modify exercise equipment to generate electricity (machines with spinny parts are easy to modify to act as generators - ellipticals, exercise bikes, etc)
  3. Use electricity generated by club members

Problems

Startup costs for a fitness center are not low, it would be quite an investment. Building and equipment costs would add up crazy fast. Modifying the equipment to turn them into generators (even in the easy cases) would be a lot of work. Most commercial equipment doesn't look like it's very friendly to the necessary modifications - it might be cheaper and easier to build everything from scratch. And from a power stand-point, it would take a lot of people working pretty hard to generate any sort of usable power.

BUT.. if someone were starting a new fitness center somewhere, it would be really cool if they looked into doing something like this. It would be a great gimmick at least, and would create a small amount of 'green' electricity from energy that would have been otherwise wasted. You could even encourage people to work out by subsidizing membership fees by the amount of electricity that each user generated - the more you work out, the less you pay.

Game On

I'm way too lazy and way too hyper today to actually try to think of anything to post about. So.. another update. Yay. :)

The facebook app that I alluded to before (it had to do with superheroes.. I think I was being super-secretive and never mentioned that before) has been temporarily back-burnered.  Ahead of it are about 20 billion other ideas for facebook apps, one of which I'm pretty excited about, and *gasp* have actually began working on. The progress is not great, but a start is a start.

I need a crazy programming project, and last night I lent a bit of php help to a friend. I couldn't help myself, it was like satisfying an addiction. I think I had forgotten how much I truly enjoy programming. I'm a geek. A huge geek. A geek who has a newfound love for actionscript and flash programming.

I'll really try to have something tangible to show soon. And hopefully it will be good. :)

The world would be a better place if…

  • more people would stand up for their beliefs rather than worrying about pleasing others or fitting in
  • everyone replaced at least one incandescent bulb with a compact fluorescent bulb
    • I didn't consistently spell "fluorescent" wrong only to notice it during a quick proofreading
  • everyone took the time to look at the moon once in awhile and contemplate how small they are in the grand scheme of things
  • everyone took the time to look at a flower once in awhile and contemplate how significant and amazing they are in the grand scheme of things
  • xkcd was published on a daily basis
  • any of the ideals of Ron Paul were actually manifested
  • you added to this (very incomplete) list in the comments below

Oh hi! I'm from the internet.

I think it was in an xkcd comic - maybe penny-arcade - a mention of people referring to the internet as their place of origin.  That should be me. I'm not sure how I'm going to accomplish it, but I fully plan to take up residence within the internet.

I think I'm going to start by walking away from conversations randomly, and then replying (via email) to the last thing that was said.

I almost titled this post "101st Post".. could you imagine me starting that trend. I think it'd get really old by "102nd Post" and unbearable by "103rd Post".

100th Post

This seems like it should be some sort of important landmark. 100 examples of my ability to stick to something, even though it doesn't have any direct measurable benefit to me.. other than helping me keep my sanity, but maybe things would be more interesting if I let the last bit of that just fade away. :)

I don't know that I've ever posted about the vending machine downstairs.. my mountain dew supplier. It's broken - it's been broken for a long time. It used to be broken in a way that made it want to give out extra bottles of dew when I put money in it - they fixed that after a few months. Now it's broken and wants to give out warm soda - not room temperature - it's acting as a beverage warmer. It's had a handwritten "out of order" sign on it for maybe 2 weeks now.

This all leads up to me mentioning my new favorite person on campus. I don't know his name, but he works here as a custodian. He's been hassling the Pepsi guy and it sounds as if he's managed to get them to agree to bring in a new machine. In the meantime, he had the Pepsi guy stock the other vending machine (the one with water and juice and iced tea) with dew to save us the walk across the building to satisfy our addiction. He is my hero.
